## How it's calculated

1. **Federal taxable income.** Gross pay minus pre-tax 401(k), health, HSA and FSA contributions, minus the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly).
2. **Optional deductions (More options).** If you are 65 or older, the standard deduction rises by $2,050 (single) and you also get the $6,000 senior deduction. Qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, $25,000 joint) are deducted from federal taxable income, phased out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
3. **Federal income tax.** The 2026 IRS brackets from 10% to 37% apply to each slice of taxable income. The Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child under 17 (and $500 for each other dependent) is then subtracted.
4. **FICA.** Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000 (single). Section 125 health deductions are exempt; 401(k) deferrals are not.
5. **State tax.** Maryland taxes income in 10 brackets from 2% to 6.5%, with the top rate starting above $1,000,000 of taxable income for single filers. Single filers get a standard deduction of $3,400 and a personal exemption of $3,200.
6. **Take-home pay** is gross pay minus every tax above, your pre-tax deductions and any after-tax deductions (such as Roth 401(k) or union dues), divided by your number of paychecks.

## Questions people ask

### How much is $60,000 after tax in Maryland?

A single filer earning $60,000 in Maryland takes home about $47,906 a year in 2026, which is $3,992 a month or $1,843 every two weeks. Total taxes are $12,094, an average rate of 20.2%.

### Does Maryland have a state income tax?

Maryland taxes income in 10 brackets from 2% to 6.5%, with the top rate starting above $1,000,000 of taxable income for single filers. All counties and Baltimore City levy a local income tax on top of state tax (average about 2.4% of AGI per Tax Foundation). Exemption phases out above $100,000/$150,000 AGI. 2% capital gains surtax for AGI over $350,000. Maryland FAMLI payroll deductions do not start until Jan 1, 2027 (none in 2026). 2026 standard deduction $3,400 single (Comptroller 2026 withholding guide) and $6,800 joint (same cost-of-living adjustment).

### How much do Social Security and Medicare take?

Together they take 7.65% of wages: 6.2% for Social Security on wages up to $184,500 in 2026, and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages. An extra 0.9% Medicare tax applies above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

### Are there local income taxes in Maryland?

Yes. 24 local jurisdictions in Maryland charge residents an income tax, from 2.25% to 3.3%. Pick yours in the local tax table on this page to include it in your take-home pay.

### How does a 401(k) contribution change my take-home pay?

401(k) contributions come out before federal income tax and, in Maryland, before state tax, so each $100 you save lowers your take-home pay by less than $100. The 2026 employee limit is $24,500. Social Security and Medicare still apply.

### Is this the same as my paycheck withholding?

It is your estimated tax for the full year. Your employer withholds using IRS Publication 15-T and your W-4, so individual paychecks can differ slightly; the difference comes back as a refund or a balance due when you file.

### Is there no tax on tips and overtime in 2026?

For federal income tax, yes, from 2025 through 2028: you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips and up to $12,500 ($25,000 married filing jointly) of qualified overtime premium, the extra half in time-and-a-half. Each shrinks by $100 for every $1,000 of income above $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Social Security, Medicare and Maryland state tax still apply. Enter the amounts under More options; your employer usually still withholds on them, so the saving arrives as part of your refund.

### Do people over 65 pay less tax on their paycheck?

Yes. At 65 or older the standard deduction rises by $2,050 for a single filer ($1,650 per spouse when married), and from 2025 to 2028 each person 65+ also gets a $6,000 senior deduction, reduced by 6% of income above $75,000 ($150,000 joint). Tick “I am 65 or older” under More options.

### What changes on paychecks in 2027?

Social Security tax will apply to wages up to $192,300 in 2027 (up from $184,500), as announced by the Social Security Administration. The IRS has not yet published the 2027 tax brackets and standard deduction; this calculator switches to them as soon as they are released.
