## How it's calculated

1. **Federal taxable income.** Gross pay minus pre-tax 401(k), health, HSA and FSA contributions, minus the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly).
2. **Optional deductions (More options).** If you are 65 or older, the standard deduction rises by $2,050 (single) and you also get the $6,000 senior deduction. Qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, $25,000 joint) are deducted from federal taxable income, phased out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
3. **Federal income tax.** The 2026 IRS brackets from 10% to 37% apply to each slice of taxable income. The Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child under 17 (and $500 for each other dependent) is then subtracted.
4. **FICA.** Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000 (single). Section 125 health deductions are exempt; 401(k) deferrals are not.
5. **State tax.** Oregon taxes income in 4 brackets from 4.75% to 9.9%, with the top rate starting above $125,000 of taxable income for single filers. Single filers get a standard deduction of $2,910 and a personal credit of $256. Employees also pay Paid Leave Oregon (employee share) at 0.6% of wages up to $184,500. Employees also pay OR Statewide Transit Tax at 0.1% of wages.
6. **Take-home pay** is gross pay minus every tax above, your pre-tax deductions and any after-tax deductions (such as Roth 401(k) or union dues), divided by your number of paychecks.

## Questions people ask

### How much is $90,000 after tax in Oregon?

A single filer earning $90,000 in Oregon takes home about $64,470 a year in 2026, which is $5,372 a month or $2,480 every two weeks. Total taxes are $25,530, an average rate of 28.4%.

### Does Oregon have a state income tax?

Oregon taxes income in 4 brackets from 4.75% to 9.9%, with the top rate starting above $125,000 of taxable income for single filers. Personal exemption is a $256 credit per person (not allowed above $100,000/$200,000 AGI). Part of federal income tax is deductible. Paid Leave Oregon: 1% total, employees pay 60% (0.6%) up to the SS wage base. Statewide transit tax 0.1% of wages. Portland-area residents may owe Metro SHS and Multnomah County Preschool for All income taxes.

### How much do Social Security and Medicare take?

Together they take 7.65% of wages: 6.2% for Social Security on wages up to $184,500 in 2026, and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages. An extra 0.9% Medicare tax applies above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

### Are there local income taxes in Oregon?

Yes. [Portland](https://paycheck-math.com/us/paycheck-calculator/oregon/portland/): residents pay 1.5% to 4% on state taxable income.

### How does a 401(k) contribution change my take-home pay?

401(k) contributions come out before federal income tax and, in Oregon, before state tax, so each $100 you save lowers your take-home pay by less than $100. The 2026 employee limit is $24,500. Social Security and Medicare still apply.

### Is this the same as my paycheck withholding?

It is your estimated tax for the full year. Your employer withholds using IRS Publication 15-T and your W-4, so individual paychecks can differ slightly; the difference comes back as a refund or a balance due when you file.

### Is there no tax on tips and overtime in 2026?

For federal income tax, yes, from 2025 through 2028: you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips and up to $12,500 ($25,000 married filing jointly) of qualified overtime premium, the extra half in time-and-a-half. Each shrinks by $100 for every $1,000 of income above $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Social Security, Medicare and Oregon state tax still apply. Enter the amounts under More options; your employer usually still withholds on them, so the saving arrives as part of your refund.

### Do people over 65 pay less tax on their paycheck?

Yes. At 65 or older the standard deduction rises by $2,050 for a single filer ($1,650 per spouse when married), and from 2025 to 2028 each person 65+ also gets a $6,000 senior deduction, reduced by 6% of income above $75,000 ($150,000 joint). Tick “I am 65 or older” under More options.

### What changes on paychecks in 2027?

Social Security tax will apply to wages up to $192,300 in 2027 (up from $184,500), as announced by the Social Security Administration. The IRS has not yet published the 2027 tax brackets and standard deduction; this calculator switches to them as soon as they are released.
