How it's calculated

  1. Federal taxable income. Gross pay minus pre-tax 401(k), health, HSA and FSA contributions, minus the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly).
  2. Optional deductions (More options). If you are 65 or older, the standard deduction rises by $2,050 (single) and you also get the $6,000 senior deduction. Qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, $25,000 joint) are deducted from federal taxable income, phased out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
  3. Federal income tax. The 2026 IRS brackets from 10% to 37% apply to each slice of taxable income. The Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child under 17 (and $500 for each other dependent) is then subtracted.
  4. FICA. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000 (single). Section 125 health deductions are exempt; 401(k) deferrals are not.
  5. State tax. Indiana has a flat income tax of 2.95% on taxable income. Single filers get a personal exemption of $1,000.
  6. Local tax. Daviess County: residents pay 1.5% on state taxable income. Non-residents working there pay 1.5%. Rate effective October 1, 2026 (Indiana Department of Revenue Departmental Notice 1), charged on Indiana adjusted gross income less exemptions.
  7. Take-home pay is gross pay minus every tax above, your pre-tax deductions and any after-tax deductions (such as Roth 401(k) or union dues), divided by your number of paychecks.

How does a 401(k) contribution change my take-home pay?
401(k) contributions come out before federal income tax and, in Indiana, before state tax, so each $100 you save lowers your take-home pay by less than $100. The 2026 employee limit is $24,500. Social Security and Medicare still apply.
Is this the same as my paycheck withholding?
It is your estimated tax for the full year. Your employer withholds using IRS Publication 15-T and your W-4, so individual paychecks can differ slightly; the difference comes back as a refund or a balance due when you file.
Is there no tax on tips and overtime in 2026?
For federal income tax, yes, from 2025 through 2028: you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips and up to $12,500 ($25,000 married filing jointly) of qualified overtime premium, the extra half in time-and-a-half. Each shrinks by $100 for every $1,000 of income above $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Social Security, Medicare and Indiana state tax still apply. Enter the amounts under More options; your employer usually still withholds on them, so the saving arrives as part of your refund.
