How it's calculated
- Federal taxable income. Gross pay minus pre-tax 401(k), health, HSA and FSA contributions, minus the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly).
- Optional deductions (More options). If you are 65 or older, the standard deduction rises by $2,050 (single) and you also get the $6,000 senior deduction. Qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, $25,000 joint) are deducted from federal taxable income, phased out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
- Federal income tax. The 2026 IRS brackets from 10% to 37% apply to each slice of taxable income. The Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child under 17 (and $500 for each other dependent) is then subtracted.
- FICA. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000 (single). Section 125 health deductions are exempt; 401(k) deferrals are not.
- State tax. South Carolina taxes income in 2 brackets from 1.99% to 5.21%, with the top rate starting above $30,000 of taxable income for single filers. Single filers get a standard deduction of $15,000, reduced as income rises (the calculator applies the phase-out).
- Take-home pay is gross pay minus every tax above, your pre-tax deductions and any after-tax deductions (such as Roth 401(k) or union dues), divided by your number of paychecks.

South Carolina notes: H.4216 (signed March 30, 2026, effective for 2026): 1.99% on income under $30,000 and 5.21% above it. South Carolina replaces federal deductions with an SC Income Adjusted Deduction of $15,000 single, $22,500 head of household and $30,000 joint, phased out proportionally between federal AGI of $40,000 and $95,000 (single) and $80,000 and $190,000 (joint), so it is zero above those amounts. Further top-rate cuts depend on revenue triggers (from 2027).
