How it's calculated
- Federal taxable income. Gross pay minus pre-tax 401(k), health, HSA and FSA contributions, minus the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly).
- Optional deductions (More options). If you are 65 or older, the standard deduction rises by $2,050 (single) and you also get the $6,000 senior deduction. Qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, $25,000 joint) are deducted from federal taxable income, phased out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
- Federal income tax. The 2026 IRS brackets from 10% to 37% apply to each slice of taxable income. The Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child under 17 (and $500 for each other dependent) is then subtracted.
- FICA. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000 (single). Section 125 health deductions are exempt; 401(k) deferrals are not.
- State tax. New Jersey taxes income in 7 brackets from 1.4% to 10.75%, with the top rate starting above $1,000,000 of taxable income for single filers. Single filers get a personal exemption of $1,000. Employees also pay NJ UI + WF/SWF (worker) at 0.425% of wages up to $44,800. Employees also pay NJ TDI (worker) at 0.19% of wages up to $171,100. Employees also pay NJ FLI (worker) at 0.23% of wages up to $171,100.
- Take-home pay is gross pay minus every tax above, your pre-tax deductions and any after-tax deductions (such as Roth 401(k) or union dues), divided by your number of paychecks.
