How it's calculated

  1. Federal taxable income. Gross pay minus pre-tax 401(k), health, HSA and FSA contributions, minus the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100 (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly).
  2. Optional deductions (More options). If you are 65 or older, the standard deduction rises by $2,050 (single) and you also get the $6,000 senior deduction. Qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, $25,000 joint) are deducted from federal taxable income, phased out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
  3. Federal income tax. The 2026 IRS brackets from 10% to 37% apply to each slice of taxable income. The Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child under 17 (and $500 for each other dependent) is then subtracted.
  4. FICA. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000 (single). Section 125 health deductions are exempt; 401(k) deferrals are not.
  5. State tax. New York taxes income in 9 brackets from 3.9% to 10.9%, with the top rate starting above $25,000,000 of taxable income for single filers. Single filers get a standard deduction of $8,000. Employees also pay NY PFL at 0.432% of wages up to $95,349. Employees also pay NY SDI (DBL) at 0.5% of wages up to $6,240.
  6. Take-home pay is gross pay minus every tax above, your pre-tax deductions and any after-tax deductions (such as Roth 401(k) or union dues), divided by your number of paychecks.

How much is $75,000 after tax in New York?
A single filer earning $75,000 in New York takes home about $57,784 a year in 2026, which is $4,815 a month or $2,222 every two weeks. Total taxes are $17,216, an average rate of 23%.
Does New York have a state income tax?
New York taxes income in 9 brackets from 3.9% to 10.9%, with the top rate starting above $25,000,000 of taxable income for single filers. Lower brackets cut for 2026 (FY2026 budget). How much do Social Security and Medicare take?
Together they take 7.65% of wages: 6.2% for Social Security on wages up to $184,500 in 2026, and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages. An extra 0.9% Medicare tax applies above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).
Are there local income taxes in New York?
Yes. New York City: residents pay 3.078% to 3.876% on state taxable income. Yonkers: residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their net state income tax.
How does a 401(k) contribution change my take-home pay?
401(k) contributions come out before federal income tax and, in New York, before state tax, so each $100 you save lowers your take-home pay by less than $100. The 2026 employee limit is $24,500. Social Security and Medicare still apply.
Is this the same as my paycheck withholding?
It is your estimated tax for the full year. Your employer withholds using IRS Publication 15-T and your W-4, so individual paychecks can differ slightly; the difference comes back as a refund or a balance due when you file.
Is there no tax on tips and overtime in 2026?
For federal income tax, yes, from 2025 through 2028: you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips and up to $12,500 ($25,000 married filing jointly) of qualified overtime premium, the extra half in time-and-a-half. Each shrinks by $100 for every $1,000 of income above $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Social Security, Medicare and New York state tax still apply. Enter the amounts under More options; your employer usually still withholds on them, so the saving arrives as part of your refund.
Do people over 65 pay less tax on their paycheck?
Yes. At 65 or older the standard deduction rises by $2,050 for a single filer ($1,650 per spouse when married), and from 2025 to 2028 each person 65+ also gets a $6,000 senior deduction, reduced by 6% of income above $75,000 ($150,000 joint). Tick “I am 65 or older” under More options.
What changes on paychecks in 2027?
Social Security tax will apply to wages up to $192,300 in 2027 (up from $184,500), as announced by the Social Security Administration. The IRS has not yet published the 2027 tax brackets and standard deduction; this calculator switches to them as soon as they are released.
